The North Beach
Playground, designed by local kids and built by local
volunteers, provides
children of Greater Racine and Racine County, plus visitors,
a well-designed, safe environment to develop physical skills,
socially interact, and just have fun.
Children can see, explore, and experience a unique playground
structure on the beach while learning about the nautical
history of the Great Lake in Racine. Construction of the
20,000 square-foot playground was accomplished with
volunteers from the community using the old-fashioned barn-raising
method over a six-day period. This coincided with Make
a Difference Day 2003 in late
October.
This project is very similar effort to the
Kids Connection Playground
project successfully completed in Mount Pleasant/Caledonia
Park in 2000. Our goal was to facilitate a similar community
volunteer project to galvanize residents
of downtown Racine and from all over Racine County.
The current project cost estimate
is $235,000.
To help in the fundraising and volunteer effort, a portable
display of pictures and information was created.
